Sleater-Kinney return with the release of their fourth single off The Center Won’t Hold, titled “Can I Go On.” The band gave fans a first listen this morning with Julia Cunningham on SiriusXMU. Following its first spin the New York Times published a feature with Carrie and Corin about the upcoming album. Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) also joined the conversation and spoke to her collaboration as the producer on the album which will be the first album she’s ever produced outside of her own work.
“Can I Go On” pulls the listener in with its upbeat, hooky guitar riffs and catchy chorus, but delivers a contrastingly pained message of existential despair; “Sell our rage, buy and trade, but we still cry for free every day...… maybe I’m not sure I wanna go on at all.” Carrie explains, “In this song, a woman's desire is used against her, so she turns it into a sinister infectiousness. The narrator finds herself on the brink of self-annihilation, grappling with the paradox of an internal darkness at odds with the pressure to outwardly perform modes of joy, relatability, and likability.” You can stream/download “Can I Go On” below.
