Del Water Gap on the making of “Alone Together”: “Alone Together” is about a time when I was struggling with some mental health problems and addiction and I was quite paranoid and existentially distressed more or less all the time. I hadn’t really let many people in on what was going on with me but I had just started a relationship with someone who had really become my escape from all the noise in my head. we had already known each other for a while as friends at that point so when we got together there was this real “some things never change” feeling. like damn, it’s been all these years and everything is different but it’s still just you and me sitting alone and talking and doing the new york times crossword together over coffee and eggs. deep, old love stuff. so it’s about that connection but it’s also about the fear of the mental stuff fucking things up and alienating someone I was trying to get close with. Samia sings on this one. her vocal was the last thing we recorded for the album. we both left new york when the pandemic hit so it was the first time we’d seen each other in ages. it was nice to reconnect in the studio. she’s one of my favorite people and favorite musicians.
