Del Water Gap on the making of Perfume: “‘Perfume’ is a song about falling in love in the bars of the east village, holding on to one other for dear life and drunkenly weaving around tables and chairs. it’s about challenging an old pool shark to a game and actually sinking a few shots. it’s about putting patsy cline on the jukebox even though everyone’s been listening to the strokes all night… josie’s, sophie’s…. the spots i missed most this last year. the song is also about escaping the city though - i grew up in the woods between two dairy farms and it’s always been a dream of mine to fall in love and run back to the forest and get some clean air back in my lungs. i feel spoiled having grown up in the woods like that and i think i’d like to grow old and die that way too.”
